{Guest Post} Top 10 Back Pain Relieving Mattresses

When it comes to relieving back pain, air mattresses are supposed to be the best. However, no one wants to sleep on an air mattress long term, so memory foam mattresses are your next best option. They reduce back pain and pressure points, and they conform to the shape of your body for a good night’s sleep. Here are the 10 best mattresses to help you sleep well despite your back problems.

Essentia Dormeuse

The Dormeuse by Essentia has an 83% customer satisfaction according to Sleep Like the Dead – it doesn’t get much better! It’s the Ford Mustang of beds: a bit pricey, but definitely worth it! Their memory foam is totally unique and pretty darn innovative – made from 100% natural latex. None of the toxic, chemical-laden petroleum or polyurethane foam in this bad boy! No bio-foam or soy foam (more junk filler), but it’s an all-natural bed that feels like it’s made for you.

The latex is topped with soft memory foam, but there is no overheating at night in this bed! It’s cooling and will draw heat away from your body. Think comfort and durability wrapped in organic softness–that’s the Essentia Dormeuse. (Check out other Essentia products here.)

Advantages: incredibly comfortable, supportive, 100% natural, made in Canada, 20-year warranty
Price: $4,739 (Queen)

Serta iComfort

While $1,099 may seem a bit pricey for a bed set, it comes complete with a foundation; so the price is not too bad all things considered. Firm, great for back pain sufferers, and pain-relieving: all words that describe the iComfort. It’s good for keeping your spine straight, so say goodbye to that aching back. However, it’s said to be not quite firm over the entire surface of the bed–kind of hard around the edges.

There is no bad smell with this bed – a common complaint with memory foam. It’s still a bit hot thanks to the body-contour foam, but what else can you expect? If only it were a more durable mattress.

Advantages: comfortable, firm, supportive, pressure-point relieving, decent warranty
Price: $1,099 (Queen set)

Sleep Number M7

{A Note from TJ–A little pricey, yes, but well worth it! This is my fave bed! Read my review HERE}. If someone owns a Sleep Number bed, it’s hard to get them to stop talking about it. These air mattresses are topped with memory foam, and they are really very comfortable for your back. Adjustable air beds are a good idea, and Sleep Number is doing it right.

Walk into any one of their myriad locations on the West Coast, lie down on the beds, and fall asleep in minutes. It’s comfortable, for sure, but prepare for your mind to be blown–by the price tag. Compare them to a gold Rolls Royce–overkill, and pretty darn expensive!

Advantages: widely available (West Coast), comfortable, durable, adjustable firmness, excellent back support
Price: $3,199 (Queen)

LinenSpa LUCID 12″

Is this bed as innovative as it claims to be? A unique feature is the mattress cover, which is infused with silver. It is supposed to stop microbes and bacteria from building up in your mattress.

The multiple layers of foam are pretty good: 2 inches of comfort foam top 2 inches of memory foam, with 8 inches of high-density foam at the base. That is a total of 12 inches of comfortable goodness to take it easy on your back. Add the 25-year warranty and a $450 price tag on Amazon, and it’s not a bad deal!

Advantages: 25-year warranty, affordable, comfortable, available via Amazon
Price: $450 on Amazon (Queen)

Ultimate Dreams 13” Gel

This high-value mattress is made in the USA and offers full body support. Gel-infused memory foam allows the mattress to conform to an individual’s unique body shape and weight. This mattress offers excellent support to relieve back pain, while not sacrificing soft-as-a-cloud comfort and luxury.

This mattress features a 3 layer design: The 8-inch high density base layer is topped by a 2-inch memory foam support layer and another 3 inches of gel memory foam for enhanced comfort.

Advantages: comfortable, available via Amazon (now on sale for $810), gel infused foam
Price: $810 on Amazon (Queen)

Sarah Peyton 10″

One interesting observation to start out: there’s no official Sarah Peyton website. The best you can do is find the mattresses on Overstock or Amazon. If you can get around this detail, you can enjoy the benefit of a well-priced mattress with great back support.

Imagine sleeping on a chiropractor’s bench…that’s what this bed is all about. Good joint and back pain relief, and it’s a pretty solid mattress. There’s only a 30-day warranty, but most people that have reviewed it still own the mattress…a good sign that there’s no returns, right? Hypoallergenic material makes this bed a good choice for people with sensitive skin, but it’s the price that really makes it worthy of its 6th place ranking.

Advantages: low price, firm texture, supportive, pain relieving, long-lasting
Price: $599 (Queen)[$324 on Amazon right now]

Serta Perfect Elements

Serta usually specializes in innerspring mattresses, but it seems they had to cash in on the hype of memory foam mattresses. They did a good job with this bed, which is made with a thicker-than-normal layer of memory foam…pretty comfortable for back sleepers. Perhaps a bit soggy in the morning, but not bad for most of the night.

It’s a good bed for people that need soft comfort. No pressure points, good for circulation, and all-round softness (though too soft for many people’s tastes). There is nothing unique about this bed, just a solid, comfortable choice of a medium-firmness mattress.

Advantages: comfortable, pain-relieving, soft, mid-priced
Price: $1,000 (Queen)

SilverRest Therapeutic

A huge selling point of this bed is the antibacterial material – a bonus for all the dust and microbe-allergic and germ-a-phobic individuals in the country. The Serenity mattress (a top seller evidently) is 10 inches thick – 3″ of memory foam over 7″ of polyurethane foam. It’s comfortable, it’s durable; it’s everything you want in a mattress.

Now we get to the heart of the matter: the price tag. Amazon’s got a great deal on the Queen right now, so that makes it a very attractive purchase for anyone seeking a deal. The 20-year warranty is reassuring, and it seems to be fairly cool for a memory foam bed. The “Dual Airflow” design pulls heat away from the body…uncommon with most memory beds.

Advantages: cooling design, well-priced, durable, hygienic, 20-year warranty
Price: $499 (Queen on Amazon)

Sleep Innovations 12″ Sure Temp

The Gel Memory Foam mattress is Sleep Innovations’ top-seller, but it’s the Sure Temp that’s best for your back. It’s got an 8-inch thick layer of supporting base foam, topped with a 4-inch layer of comfort memory foam. As far as comfort goes, it’s as plush as back pain sufferers can ask for.

The price is very nice…just $290 for a Queen at Costco! It’s also sold in Wal-Mart, CVS, Sears, Sam’s Club, and a whole slew of big-box stores. You really only have one mattress choice, but this is a good overall option. It is said to overheat, but that is typical of memory foam.

Advantages: comfortable, supportive, widely available, very affordable, good return policy
Price: $290 (Queen)

Tempur-Pedic Contour Select

Tempur-Pedic knows how to sell a lot of mid-level mattresses: they are in every single mattress store around the country. The mattresses are nothing special, but they are available anywhere beds are sold. They jack up their prices, so that you have to pay nothing short of a small fortune when you do buy their beds.

They claim to have developed memory foam specifically for people with back pain, but the poor customer ratings (65% satisfaction on Sleep Like the Dead) opposes their claims. Still, the mattress is great for sliding in and out of bed…a challenge for anyone with back pain. Though their ratings could be better, their easy accessibility make them worth mentioning.

Advantages: available everywhere, mid-level quality, durability, and comfort
Price: $1,699 (Twin)
