Four years ago, on August 1, 2008, Wendy Weir founded Libre Tea, a business that provides unique products for "loose leaf tea on the go." Here's what Wendy says about her love for tea:
Tea, for me, provides a space to take a breath, reconnect with oneself and with the world. And now the Libre loose leaf tea glass allows people to enjoy all of these things–anywhere, and anytime! And it's simple–just add hot water and go!–Wendy Weir
Inspiring Tea Moments is Wendy's mission. A Tea Moment can be a memory, an event, a picture, or anything where tea has impacted a moment in time.
Libre is passionate about giving to organizations and charities that support women, wellness, and water themes. Some such organizations they have worked with include Global Women's Water Initiative, Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), and Shanti Uganda.
Libre sent me their 9-ounce regular tea glass to review.
The exterior of the glass is made of polycarbonate to make it sturdy when used on the go. The interior is constructed of glass to keep the tea flavorful and healthful.
It has a stainless steel filter that screws on and off.
The lid has a beautiful, ornate design, adding a special, elegant touch. The lid's interior is lined with BPA-free polypropylene.
When I was a little girl, I remember visiting my grandma in her little apartment in Denver, Colorado. Whenever we visited, she would always serve me a cup of tea. I remember the gold-rimmed china tea cups with the fancy handle and the pink, floral print around the side. I remember the woodsy, slightly sweetened taste and the grassy odor of the tea as I sipped it. And I remember seeing short, black and orange sticks and bits of loose leaf tea appear when I reached the bottom of the teacup.
When Libre contacted me to do a review of their tea glass, many fond memories of my grandma came rushing to the forefront (my Tea Moment, I suppose). And, in addition to being thankful for the reminiscing, I was also thankful that Libre brought the concept of drinking loose leaf tea to my attention.
Since I have been working towards living a more healthful lifestyle by making better choices about what I do and consume, tea is a natural addition to my diet. Tea–especially organic, loose leaf tea–has a myriad of health benefits. It can lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, strengthen your heart, and increase your energy–just to name a few.
When the tea glass arrived (I chose the 9-ounce regular glass because it looked like the size I would use most often), I was excited to try the loose leaf green tea I had recently purchased.
There are two different ways to use the Libre glass. One way is to add a teaspoon of leaves directly to the glass, pour in some hot water, and screw on the filter. This way is used for green teas and teas that take longer to steep. Once the tea is ready, you drink through the mesh strainer.
The other way to use the Libre glass is by filling the glass with hot water, screwing on the filter, then filling the filter itself with the tea leaves. Next, you screw on the lid, flip the glass upside down, and allow the tea to steep. Once its ready, you flip the glass upright and unscrew the filter and lid together and drink directly from the glass. This method is best for black teas and other teas that take a short time to steep.
Since I like to add a bit of honey to my tea, and since I have discovered that I like reusing the tea leaves until they loose all flavor, I found that I prefer the second method (where you put the leaves in the filter and turn the glass upside down) even though I use green tea. This way, I can add my honey without getting it mixed with the leaves.
The glass in simple and straightforward to use. The tea steeps very well with either method, it tastes great because of the glass interior, and the glass is easy to hand wash. Even the Little Mister enjoyed a spot of tea in the lid (and don't worry–I only gave him a tiny taste; he doesn't normally drink tea).
Overall, I found the Libre tea glass to be a true necessity for anyone who is a regular loose leaf tea drinker. It would also make an excellent, unique gift for such a person.
